International President
Charles Ochero Cornelio
Greetings! I am honored in my simple capacity to address the global family of students and youth in general. I am called Charles Ochero CORNELIO and I am a citizen of South Sudan by referendum. The family I came from is made up of six sisters and one brother making a total of eight with me being the seventh child in the bottom. My both parents are from the Acholi land in Magwi county in Eastern Equatoria State.
My life in the IMCS was an adventure and everyday continues to be so. I first joined the movement in 2002 during my first year in the medical school. Dragged by a friend (James Elia) for my first meeting and with little interest, I accepted to go. My preconceived mind made me face the challenge of failing to feel the relevance of my participation in the movement in relation to my life needs. Being from a poor family again was a challenge but what made me take the movement in heart was due to the fact that, most of the students had something very common. Can you guess what that was? Of cause POVERTY! I started feeling the peace of mind knowing and believing that our collective efforts are all we need to cause an impact in the community as Blessed John Paul II said "No one is so poor to the extent that he/she has nothing to offer, nor too rich that he/she can't receive an offer". In 2004, I was elected as national secretary general and in 2006 in Kabgayi-Rwanda, I was elected as the eastern Africa sub regional coordinator (Sudan,Uganda,Kenya,Ethiopia,Tanzania and Rwanda). This offered me a wider scope of learning students' diversity and realities.
In 2010 in Arusha Tanzania when handing over my sub regional role, I applied for serving at the international level and in November, Africa confirmed me as the continent's candidate for the International Team. I owe them thanks for rendering such a trust upon me. On 26th July 2011, I was elected to my current position by the World Assembly of IMCS family in Cologne-Germany. Thanks to the global family of this precious movement for conferring upon me this responsibility. I continue to pray that I serve the purpose I was elected for during my four years mandate of learning, serving, joy, agonies, sacrifices etc. The question asked by many was "Now that you are a doctor, don't you think giving four full time years for the movement means an end to your career?" With a joyous heart and a smiling face I answer, "It is for Jesus who determines destiny". Thanks to the outgoing team who in many ways inspired me to take this leadership role in the international level especially Christopher Derige MALANO (outgoing Secretary general) . The IMCS Sudan and the incredible chaplain Fr.Hans Putman SJ can't escape my appreciation for the formation I received from them throughout the years.
To all the IMCS global family, I look forward to continue serving you as we continue working together building the broken worlds, bridging them and going beyond borders.
May the good Lord Bless you in your endeavors!!!
