Based in the principal of subsidiary, IMCS is organized to respond to the needs of the students at the local, national and international levels. Presently, IMCS gathers together about 80 autonomous national Catholic student organizations into 6 continental regions. In order to better facilitate communication, solidarity and common action among the IMCS national federations, coordinations have been established at the regional and international levels.
Local and National: The local and national groups of IMCS are diverse depending upon the reality of each country. They vary from federations of university parishes and campus ministries to Catholic Action cell groups. To be part of IMCS, each national federation must be student-led and recognized by the local Church bodies.
Regional: Each national federation of IMCS is part of a continental region. These regions help bring together the national groups at the regional level. In the regions of Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and North America, the national federations elect regional teams to coordinate the work at the regional level. The IMCS regional coordinations in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East are joint with IYCS.
International: Every four years, delegates of the national federations meet for the IMCS World Assembly. At the W.A. the students set the future direction of IMCS and elect two recent students to the International Team. The students also propose three candidates to the Holy See (Vatican) for the position of the International Chaplain.
Representatives of the IMCS regional teams meet annually as part of the International Formation Sessions to ensure the directions set by the students are carried out and to help foster deeper solidarity among Catholic students worldwide.
